I am joined by Antelope Hill Publishing and Psychopolitics to discuss “right wing art.” We spend most of the episode on film, but also touch and literature to try and distinguish right wing from reactionary, comparing films such as Blade Runner 2049 and Drive, Bone Tomahawk to The Searchers, among many others.
I loved Dune, although I never considered it right wing. Based might be the best word for it. Herbert was a good guy, and a family man. His son has carried on the tradition. Yes, Starship Troopers was explicitly right wing - however, in his personal life Heinlein was kind of a degenerate, into swinging, nudity and stuff. I don't think he ever had kids. And that comes out in his later work, even going into trans stuff.
A lot of SciFi and fantasy writers in the 60s and 70s had a kind of blank slate approach to human sexuality. And also trying to rationalize their own fetishes?
With respect to Wagner - it is too simplistic to call his work 'right wing'. 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' comes directly out of the revolutions of 1848/49 - events which Wagner took part in personally (alongside Bakunin no less). Nationalism was seen as a left/liberal movement in 19th century Europe. Metternich and the system he established after the Napoleonic wars can hardly be described as liberal, but that was the system the nationalists wanted to overthrow.
Good talk, meandering around the issue and fleshing out terminology. Personally I think semantics matter, but as a creator (and publishers have a role in creation), one should always just think of the true, the beautiful, and the good. But those require their own explication:
True: Don't lie to yourself.
Beautiful: Beauty is downstream from values and "use value." I've had this argument with online Shopenhauer stans, but I still hold that things are beautiful to us because of what they mean for our life. Some of that is learned in a lifetime, and some is learned in evolutionary time. This can be perverted by misapprehension and deliberate ideology, but ultimately what is the most True will be the most reliably Beautiful.
Good: Good is a relationship between the True and the Beautiful and relates to the courage, will, and sacrifice to energetically pursue and defend the them. My religious friends will cringe at that, but I hope there is some common ground.

Conan had an awesome thread on Twitter about this years ago. All perverts
Not surprised at all - I did know about some of them. I'll try to track down the thread.

Yes I know but the work is never the less “nationalist” which is today right wing.

To tie in gamergate episode would the Nords of Skyrim be reactionary or explicitly right wing?

Ever heard of the band Sunn O))) — whenever I listen to them I feel like I’m being put into a psychic cauldron to be boiled alive.
Great episode btw.
